Today’s Top Ten was supposed to be the Top Ten Popular Authors that I haven’t read yet but frankly I have such eclectic reading tastes that there really aren’t any that I haven’t. Also when they get to the really popular stage I will give a book of theirs a try simply to see what the big deal is about. Sometimes it works out and I find a new love….sometimes not so much….

1. and 2. Stephanie Meyer and E.L. James Well you know this was coming. I read books 1,2, and 4 of Twilight and the first 100 pages or so of 50 Shades of Grey. I Personally just didn’t like the writing styles. How much about what they eat for breakfast do I really need to know? And don’t even get me started on the characters…

3.  Janet Evanocvich. I just can’t get into her stories. I want to and I keep trying but I just can’t.

4.  Anne Rice. I love love love Interview with a Vampire but I just can’t get into her other books.

5. Gillian Flynn I tried reading Gone Girl but I really just didn’t like the characters. I verbally said “Ugh, I can’t deal with this” and then set the book down. I have yet to go back.

6.  John Grisham… The law is the premise of the book. Need I say more?

7.  Dan Brown the whole historical inaccuracy thing just gets to me every time.

8.  Sophie Kinsella Confessions of a Shopoholic was pretty good but I just can’t handle any of her other books.

9.  Emily Griffin I tried to read Something Blue, and I just didn’t like any of the characters.

10. Cassandra Claire. I wanted to like her books. I saw the panel at WonderCon last year featuring her and I thought hey I should check out her books. I read a sample and realized that yup, they weren’t for me.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and the Bookish. If you want to play along, post a link on their site to your blog and then post a link them from your blog.

I really like your reasons for not reading these authors. I can totally understand why you would want to steer clear of the Twilight series and Fifty Shades. I read them to see what the hype was all about, but didn’t think they were amazing.

  2. I actually swallowed Clare and Meyer, but Twilight is total shit and Clare’s a plagiarizing poop so I am so over their stuff.
    I don’t think I’ll enjoy 50SoG but I’ll start, so I can bash the books legitimately. 😀
    Happy reading!

For me, the more popular a writer, the more likely I am to run away!

Here’s my Top Ten Popular Authors I’ve Never Read.

  4. I forced myself to read the Twilight series while I was student teaching because my students were loving it, and was appalled at how bad it was. And I don’t even want to try 50 shades. But to each his own, right?

    • Exactly. I kept reading the books because u thought they had to get better. After the first book i borrowed the others from my sister because I refused to spend money on them. The reason why I didn’t read book 3 was because she accidentally mixed up the covers of book 3 and 4 and I didn’t realize I was reading book 4 in the series and not book 3, like I thought I was, until about halfway through. I acknowledge that people like this series and that’s ok. The power of popular authors is that they get people to read and I like to think of Twilight as a gateway book. If someone tells me they like Twilight I am like great, and suggest some other (better) books they might like.

Ha, this looks a lot like my 1st version of my TTT list this week! 🙂 I’ve never been able to get into John Grisham — I didn’t like The Firm, and I’m not a fan of legal thrillers or courtroom dramas, so I’ll pass. I’ve read all the Twilight & 50 Shades books… that puts me somewhere on the weird end of the spectrum of “I couldn’t stop reading the stupid books even though they kinda sucked”, lol. And I just don’t read crime/thrillers/detective stories as a general rule, so no Evanovich et al for me. Don’t even get me started on Dan Brown! Just can’t. (I did love Gone Girl, though, although I don’t feel the need to read her earlier books, and I’ve loved Anne Rice in the past, although I haven’t read a new book of hers in at least a decade or more — and don’t plan to).

    • Yeah I didn’t want to be really negative and I hope I wasn’t too negative but sometimes a girl has just got to vent. Plus when I tried to attack the subject head on with no spin I hit writers block.

50 Shades was so horrible I DNF either! The writing was awful, so I feel bad that she is getting all this money for the “mommy porn” craze! There are so many talented authors out there and she is not one!
